Artificial Intelligence and Digital Dermatology: Applications and Challenges

This chapter examines the rapidly expanding role of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning algorithms in dermatological diagnosis, prognosis, and clinical decision support. It critically appraises the performance of AI-based image analysis tools for skin cancer detection, inflammatory disease classification, and wound assessment, benchmarking these against trained dermatologists and multispecialty evaluators. The chapter also addresses fundamental challenges including dataset bias, regulatory pathways, interpretability of AI outputs, and the ethical dimensions of deploying autonomous diagnostic systems in clinical practice.
